Healthcare Library Highlights January 2021
If you are moving to a new location or post at the beginning of February as part of HSC Changeover Day, it is important to update your details with The Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland.
Updating your details will ensure a seamless service from The Healthcare Library especially when using the online request form or borrowing items. This will ensure that if the Library is posting books out to you, they are sent to the correct work address. The same applies to any books or articles requested from other libraries on your behalf.
You can easily update your details by accessing the ‘Change of Details’ form through The Healthcare Library website:
https://healthcarelibrary.qub.ac.uk/Membership/ChangeofDetails/
Once you have completed the form, click on Submit. When the Library has processed your change of details form, you will receive an email from us by way of confirmation.
As always, if you have any questions about your membership, please contact us by emailing: info@healthcarelibrary.qub.ac.uk or make contact with your nearest library branch.
It can be difficult to find medical images, graphs, diagrams etc with the necessary copyright permissions to use in presentations, and especially if you are presenting at a conference. One of the library resources, ClinicalKey is a great resource to help overcome this problem.
ClinicalKey is a huge database of Elsevier resources, which also includes a vast bank of images, videos, and graphs that you can use for teaching and training purposes, or in conference presentations.
To make full use of the ClinicalKey Resource, including exporting images, you need to activate an individual ClinicalKey account from within the library subscription to the ClinicalKey resource (this is free of charge). You will then be able to export images directly to PowerPoint. Each image is exported to an individual slide and includes all the relevant citation and copyright information.
To access ClinicalKey
Go to Databases A-Z – ClinicalKey and login with your library login details. Then activate your account at the top right hand corner of the screen. If you need more help with this you can view 2 short tutorials, one on how to activate your account, and another on Exporting images from ClinicalKey. https://healthcarelibrary.qub.ac.uk/TrainingandSupport/OnlineTutorials/
Specialist Librarians in the Healthcare Library team are often asked to help with or undertake literature searches for members. The librarians are happy to help with searches for clinical need, policy development, patient care, audit, standards & guidelines reviews, service development –all manner of topics. We do draw the line however at doing literature searches for academic courses (just saying!)–the skills developed by healthcare professionals through undertaking their own searches are after all part of the armoury they will carry with them throughout their careers when searching for evidence-based care. If you do need assistance the specialist librarians can help with training on searching the databases. https://healthcarelibrary.qub.ac.uk/TrainingandSupport/SpecialistLibrarians/
Literature searches/reviews aim to answer questions and inform professionals of the best available evidence when making decisions; influence policy; and identify future research priorities. Depending on the subject of and reason for the search the librarians will access the databases available via the Healthcare Library https://libguides.qub.ac.uk/HealthcareLibrary/Databases and formulate a search strategy, normally liaising with the requester to agree search terms. The search is undertaken and may be modified (more than once) and the results in form of citations forwarded to the requester.
In late September I was asked to undertake a search for information in relation to domiciliary care during Covid. As you know most of the evidence around any aspect of Covid is emerging and along with searching the databases it was necessary to access other sources as information is published quickly. The Healthcare Library has a Current Information Resources section on Covid19 https://libguides.qub.ac.uk/Healthcare-Library-Covid-19 bringing together key resources, evidence and expert search strategies.
The Department published the report: RAPID LEARNING REVIEW OF DOMICILIARY CARE IN NORTHERN IRELAND in October 2020. The report’s aims were to collate and consider “any learning about domiciliary care issues during the Covid 19 pandemic in NI in order to inform current and future planning...” My work and the work of other contributors to the literature review is acknowledged and it is very gratifying to realise that the work the specialist librarians undertake (mainly) from behind a computer screen is used to inform recommendations and make a difference to healthcare staff and clients.
