Healthcare Library Highlights December 2024
The Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland offers online access via the website; however there are a number of physical library spaces available to HSC staff. Here we give an overview of Craigavon Healthcare Library.
The Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland at Craigavon is located on the first floor, in the Medical Education Centre, Craigavon Area Hospital providing a service to HSC staff in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, to HSC placement students within the Trust and to QUB staff and students. The Library is open Mon – Thurs 9.00am-5.00pm and Fri 9.00am-4.30pm.
Hazel the Librarian manages the library and purchases books. She also provides training for staff including 1-1 help with specific searches as well as carrying out literature searches for staff. She is also the regional specialist librarian for social services and psychological therapy staff. There are also two library assistants: Alison who works Mon & Tues and Bernie who works Wed-Fri. You will usually find them at the desk in the library and they are always happy to help and answer any questions you have. You are welcome to call in during opening hours, or contact the library by phone Tel 375 62107 or email: healthcare.library@southerntrust.hscni.net
The Library is a quiet relaxed place to study and it is great to see the library so well used by both students and staff. There are study spaces in the library, in the two computer rooms and the reading room, all located on the first floor in the MEC. The computer rooms and the reading room are open 24/7.
Here are some of the ways we support SHSCT staff by providing them with the information, articles, research, books, help with searches etc. they need:
- research into various treatments for patient or client care,
- Accessing information to support ongoing study such as professional development courses, post graduate qualifications, part time undergraduate degrees etc.
- QiP - quality improvement projects,
- CPD, revalidation, interview preparation etc.

The Healthcare Library is delighted to announce that Embase is now available to all members. Embase is a database covering biomedical literature and extensive amounts of pharmacological research dating back to 1974.
This resource compliments the Medline database and by searching both researchers can retrieve a good range of the biomedical research. Embase will also be particularly useful for pharmacists as it indexes drug literature in more detail than Medline.
To access Embase:-
- Search for it via the Library search
- Go to the Database A-Z list
- access via your profession specific guide
If you have any queries or would like training please contact your subject librarian
