Healthcare Library Highlights February 2026
It is important you update your library membership details each time you move jobs/Trusts etc. Your login details will continue to work until it is time to renew your membership so you will be able to access the e-resources and place requests for articles and books. But, if we do not have your current work address or email there will be a delay in contacting you and ultimately we may not be able to send you the resources you want, particularly if both your work and home details have changed.
Current Awareness: if you receive a Current Awareness Bulletin from your Specialist Librarian, please advise them of any changes to your email address.
So please take a few minutes and update your details each time you move. Thank you.
We use your work email as our primary means of keeping in contact with you. This may include:
- Sending articles you have requested
- Alerting you when books available for collection (or ones we need back)
- Current awareness mailing lists (you need to advise your Specialist Librarian directly if your email address changes)
- advise you of upcoming training
- other library communication – including this informative newsletter
On the whole feedback was very positive about the reading room. Staff particularly like the quiet atmosphere, having an individual desk, the proximity to the hospital wards, and that it is open 24/7. There were also some suggestions to improve the facilities.
Staff were invited to write their answers to two questions on a flipchart that was displayed in the Reading Room for a week. Why did you choose to work in the reading room? and What would improve your experience here? All comments on the “Why?” were positive including: it is quiet, private, I have my own desk here, and some highlighted the necessity of the space “I have nowhere else to work when I am on the hospital site” Staff enjoy the peaceful, comfortable setting of the reading room, and that some desks have PCS, and some do not.
We also asked staff what would improve their work/study experience.
There were a few requests for webcams for attending meetings. One camera and headset were already available to borrow in the Library. We have created a new poster promoting this and we also acquired 1 additional set to lend out.
There were originally 3 linked soft seats in the reading room. These were moved out of the room to create a small breakout area, but the feedback was that staff prefer them in the room, so that is where they will remain.
There were also some requests we cannot fulfil at this time due to both space and finance constraints. These included a partition to give added privacy when online at meetings or on calls and boxes to store laptops / bags when visiting wards. We are aware of both needs, hopefully these can be considered at another time.
Library staff found the exercise interesting and helpful and we are grateful for everyone who took the time to contribute to the survey.

Did you know the Cochrane Library - Cochrane Library training resources | Cochrane Library -provides guides and webinars to help you get the most from the Cochrane Library, and to develop your skills in understanding and implementing evidence based medicine. Some are free of charge and some require payment. Topics include: the essentials of EBM, Conducting and intervention reviews and Cochrane methodology.
Take a look at what is available including tips on using the Cochrane Library.
Cochrane Evidence Essentials provides an overview and introduction to evidence-based medicine, including clinical trials. The 6 modules are presented in an interactive narrative style, with opportunities to read, listen, watch video and take quizzes to check what you have learned. Each lasts between 30 & 45 minutes and can be taken at any time. They are designed for both healthcare staff, patients and the public so it is a useful introduction, not an in-depth look at EBM. Webinars in the Evidence Essentials series include: Evidence based medicine; RCTS; introduction to systematic reviews; Understanding and using systematic reviews; Patient & public involvement in Cochrane and critical appraisal of rapid reviews.
