I am an ST6 Psychiatry trainee, currently working in NIMDTA as an ADEPT Clinical Leadership Fellow. I studied Medicine at Queen’s University and graduated in 2012. I completed Foundation Programme training in the Belfast and Northern Trusts. I then entered Core Psychiatry training from F2 and am currently a General Adult Psychiatry higher trainee. I am in the final year of a Masters in Clinical Education at Queen’s.
It was through my MSc dissertation that I became reacquainted with the Healthcare Library. I was able to avail of a one-to-one session with the Specialist Librarian for Medicine, Dentistry & Healthcare Sciences to help with a literature search. This was invaluable in helping me start my dissertation and will definitely be a service I will utilise again in the future. Also during my post in NIMDTA as an ADEPT Fellow I have been fortunate enough to become a trainee doctor representative for the Healthcare Library and I have become aware of the extent of services available through the library. They offer support with literature searches, obtaining journals and articles, a selection of work areas and room booking with excellent IT equipment (including an interactive whiteboard!). They have “hot topic” areas with a focused look at different clinical areas or disciplines. Specialist librarians can also come out to your area or team to deliver focused training to your needs.
So how could this help you? As a medical student or junior doctor some of these services could make life so much easier! For example, if completing an audit or quality improvement project, the library could help with background research and understanding of the subject area. If completing dreaded membership exams, the library not only offers dedicated study space in every Trust but also could help with relevant textbooks, journal databases and one-to-one sessions. For any medical interview you need to have up-to-date topics for the specialty, the library has access to a number of online journals to help you have the most recent evidence to talk about. Finally if, like so many of us, you are completing postgraduate courses either locally or online, the library can provide an abundance of resources and can even complete literature searches.
So I would like to urge you all to join the Healthcare Library free of charge and make use of some of these services, or call in to the library sites to have a chat!

Did you know library members have access to 100's of e-books that are freely available to read day or night? (Internet access required)
E-Books are clearly identified in the library catalogue, all you need to do is logon with your library number & password you can read the book online.
It is generally possible to copy and print sections or a chapter from an e-book (within copyright restrictions), and most e-books identify how much can be printed.
A recent survey with a small group of library members clearly identified the benefits of having easy access to e-books. "I like e-books because they are so much quicker and easier to access when you need to find something out”
We are always grateful to receive recommendations for book purchases, if you think it would be good to have a book available electronically, please let your specialist librarian know.
The Reading Well collection is a selection of self-help books to enable individuals to understand and manage a range of health conditions. This collection is based in The Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland at the Royal Victoria Hospital and is available to HSC staff members. It covers topics such as: stress, anxiety, depression, grief, eating disorders, pain, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, postnatal depression etc.
For more information on the books that are available you can browse the booklist at:

Books are available for loan from the Healthcare Library, either by calling in person, or by using the place request option on the library homepage: https://healthcarelibrary.qub.ac.uk/ The book can then be posted to your nearest branch library for collection, or it may be possible to post it to your work address.
The local Reading Well Collection was developed in The Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland in response to a request from a Clinical Psychologist based in the BHSCT Occupational Health Team who saw the value of providing books for staff who had been referred to their employer’s occupational health team.
The Reading Well scheme is a part of a national initiative organised by the Reading Agency with the specific aim of enabling individuals to better understand and manage a range of health conditions through reading relevant books from a specific reading list. The scheme is endorsed by health professionals who were also involved in recommending the books to be included on the reading lists. There is an established evidence base around reading to support good mental health & physical wellbeing.
The Healthcare Library's journals are now accessible via Read by QxMD, a research discovery and alerting app that makes it easier for you to connect to the full text of articles on mobile devices.
