Young woman ponders
Confused about which library resource to use?
Guide to using the right Library Resources

Which library resource will best answer your query?

Should you search the catalogue or an A-Z list of databases or the list of E-Journals?

Are you looking for an image perhaps? Or information for patient education? Or a video?

It can be confusing to know where to start.  For help, click on the A-Z list of databases on the Healthcare Library homepage and at the very top of the list you will be able to access a pdf Guide to using the right Library Resource.

This is a useful guide asking you initially what you are looking for, leading you to the resource and providing further help in how to navigate that resource if available.

The guide is a great place to start – give it a go….

INFORMATION OVERLOAD - KEEPING UP TO DATE
How to keep up to date with the vast amount of information that is published each month

There are different ways you can try to keep up to date: Subscribe to a Healthcare Library current awareness service; Set up individual journal alerts to your favourite journals; Register with Read by QxMD and set up alerts for keywords or key journals in the app.

Keeping up to date with current research and information is a constant challenge for healthcare staff.  Gone are the days when the journal arrived in the post, and you set it aside to browse – one day, now you need to remember to look at the online issue.  To make it easier, most journals enable you to set up an alert to receive, by email, the table of contents of each new journal issue.  For more information on this, see our short guide on Journal Alerts

Alternatively, if you like using apps on your phone you can download Read by QxMD to access papers in Healthcare Library journals.  This app enables you to receive notifications of articles published on a specific topic, or new issues of selected journals. Click on the link for more information.

The Healthcare Library also produces a number of Current Awareness Bulletins complied by the relevant Specialist Librarian to help you keep up to date with what is being published.   A selection of current articles are presented in an interactive bulletin with links to the full text.   Bulletins are available on the relevant professional guide on the Healthcare Library website, or you can opt in to receive your chosen bulletin(s) by email when they are produced.  The Psychology and Social Work Bulletins also include a monthly topical supplement focusing on a particular aspect of service provision.

You can subscribe to as many or as few bulletins as you want. To view and subscribe to bulletins, click on the links below and follow any instructions that appear on the next page.

Don't forget to change your details with the Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland
Have you changed job or moved Trusts?
Don’t lose touch with the library, update your contact details today

It is important you update your library membership details each time you move jobs/Trusts etc.   Your login details will continue to work until it is time to renew your membership so you will be able to access the e-resources and place requests for articles and books.  But, if we do not have your current work address or email there will be a delay in contacting you and ultimately we may not be able to send you the resources you want, particularly if both your work and home details have changed.

Current Awareness:  if you receive a Current Awareness Bulletin from your Specialist Librarian, please advise them of any changes to your email address.

So please take a few minutes and update your details each time you move.  Thank you.

We use your work email as our primary means of keeping in contact with you.  This may include:

  • Sending articles you have requested
  • Alerting you when books available for collection (or ones we need back)
  • Current awareness mailing lists (you need to advise your Specialist Librarian directly if your email address changes)
  • advise you of upcoming training
  • other library communication – including this informative newsletter
