Librarian Training Opportunities
Help and training available for all library members

The Specialist Librarians and the Branch Librarians provide training to library members throughout the year.  Autumn generally sees a significant rise in staff asking for and attending training.

Some examples include:

  • Bespoke training sessions: these can be arranged for a team, or a group of staff who are undertaking a specific project or course of study to support their work
  • General sessions offered to individual professions or within a specific trust
  • Training in using individual databases such as Medline, Cinahl, Clinical Key
  • Individual support for a literature search

Please contact either your Specialist Librarian or your local Trust-Based Branch Librarian to find out how we can provide the most appropriate training for you or your team.

Recent ClinicalKey Enhancements

ClinicalKey has recently enhanced its interface and workflows to make it easier for you to find the information you need quickly and easily.

These recent changes follow feedback from users and include a refreshed look to the interface and quick links to key content.  From the homepage you can use the cards to easily access all the key resources available to you in including Clinical Overviews, Drug monographs, Calculators, Guidelines, Patient Education and Procedural videos.  If you use the search box, as you start searching, smart search will suggest shortcuts.

To quickly understand the changes why not have a look at some the online videos that further explain the enhancements:-

The Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland at QUB Medical Biology Centre Library Refurbishment

In 2019-20, the library sought your feedback on services available in The Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland at QUB Medical Biology Centre (MBC) using a variety of survey tools.  A basic exit survey kiosk was positioned at the library exit so you could let us know if you were :-) or :-( with the study environment on that visit.  Library staff also embarked on a roving survey throughout the MBC Foyer and asked specific questions relating to seating availability and services used in the library and asked for qualitative feedback as well.

Using these feedback mechanisms, along with additional information derived from various other sources such as Annual Customer Satisfaction Surveys, it was determined that seat availability and lack of services such as study rooms (only 1 available previously) and power sockets at all study spaces were issues that concerned you.

We listened carefully to your feedback and, despite a delay due to the pandemic, the library underwent a refurbishment project this summer (2021) and a new layout with additional space, in line with the needs you identified in your feedback, was developed.  The Library reopened on September 20th and is a lovely, bright and welcoming space which hopefully meets all your needs.

Following the refurbishment project, The Healthcare Library at QUB Medical Biology Centre now has:

  • Increased floor space
  • Additional Seating
  • 5 Group Study Rooms
  • 2 individual study rooms (which can be booked for parent / child use)
  • Power sockets available at every study space

Each Group Study Room will have a PC, Media Screen and whiteboard available – we are still awaiting delivery of the PCs however.  Online booking for the study rooms should be made available by end of October via qub.ac.uk/qol.

Your opinion matters, please continue to provide us with feedback so that we can continue to provide the services you want and need: Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland online feedback

Wellbeing@ the Library in Craigavon
Wellbeing Book Collection and Hub launched at Craigavon

A second Wellbeing book collection has been set up in The Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland at Craigavon and is part of a wider Wellbeing hub initiative. This project was funded through the SHSCT Staff Health and Wellbeing Steering Group and the Southern Area Mental Health Implementation Plan.

The project was launched 22nd June 2021 with the aim of promoting the benefits of reading for health and wellbeing to HSC staff and students on placement in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. It was initiated by the SHSCT Promoting Wellbeing Division in partnership with the staff in the Healthcare Library in Craigavon Area Hospital and with the support of the Trust’s Psychology Department.

The Wellbeing Hub is endorsed by health professionals and has three main objectives:

  • To support the health & wellbeing of the staff & placement students in the Southern Health & Social Care Trust
  • To inform & support the professional development of staff & placement students
  • To improve the aesthetics of the Healthcare Library for staff and its users.

As the funding was provided for a specific Trust based project, the books are only for the use of Southern Trust Staff & students on placement within the Trust. Library staff promote the collection to staff throughout the Southern Trust using the Trust newsletter.

Some of the titles are also available as e-books for all Healthcare Library members. Titles include:  Your guide to understanding and dealing with dementia; Can I tell you about cerebral palsy; The sleep solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It; The Pursuit of Perfect: How to Stop Chasing Perfection and Start Living a Richer, Happier Life.

Art posters were bought and some were kindly donated by the Cato gallery in London; these are now hanging in the library and the reading room and improve the library environment for everyone. Further projects are being considered to facilitate staff wellbeing @the Library at Craigavon, including an art project with the SHSCT  Arts Care  artist in residence.  Library staff are excited to see how this will develop and how it will bring more people in to use the library.

The Wellbeing Collection in the SHSCT is the second to be established in a Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland branch, the other collection is in the Healthcare Library of Northern Ireland at the Royal Victoria Hospital, the books in this collection can be borrowed by all staff.
